Comte Liger-Belair: A Collection of Twelve Postcards from a Living Land

Where vines don’t align—they flow with the landscape

In the beating heart of Burgundy, where vineyards follow the contours of the land rather than forming rigid lines, you’ll find Domaine du Comte Liger-Belair—a house that doesn’t merely make wine, but sculpts a worldview. Founded in 1815 and reborn with intensity in the early 21st century under the vision of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair, the domaine has turned the silence of the earth into liquid poetry.

Here, in Vosne-Romanée, fashion is not followed, nor applause pursued. The truth of the terroir is the only goal. Each cuvée, each parcel, each vintage is a unique poem written in Pinot Noir ink, on limestone parchment, under the rhythm of the weather. To understand the 2018 collection, one must first understand the place, its lineage, and above all—its conviction.

Vosne-Romanée: Cradle of the Ethereal

Located in the Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée is, for many, the spiritual epicenter of Pinot Noir. Within its borders lie some of the world’s most legendary climats: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg… and of course, La Romanée—France’s smallest Grand Cru monopole at just 0.845 ha, with an outsized impact.

The soils of Vosne speak softly but say so much: fossilized limestone, iron-rich marl, perfect drainage. It is a mineral symphony that produces wines not of brute force, but of depth, energy, and finesse. Here, Pinot Noir reaches its purest form: perfumed, silky, with a structure that holds without overpowering.

The 2018 Vintage: Generous Light, Deep Structure

2018 was a warm year in Burgundy, with an early spring and long, dry summer. The grapes reached full maturity, offering unusual concentration. Thanks to biodynamic farming and tightly managed yields, Liger-Belair’s wines retained both tension and freshness.

The result is a vintage of restrained power and elegant ripeness, with velvety tannins and aromatic depth that hints at longevity, even in its youth.

Burgundy in its most intimate form

In the world of fine wine, some estates impress with history, others with prestige—but very few move the soul with every parcel, every bottle, and every pause between sips. Liger-Belair is one of them. The 2018 vintage marks a defining moment: a meeting of climatic maturity and varietal purity, shaped into liquid architecture by the hand of Louis-Michel Liger-Belair.

Each wine in this collection is more than a label—it is a testament to terroir, time, and talent.

1. La Romanée – Grand Cru Monopole 2018 (2 bottles)

The spiritual heart of the domaine. La Romanée is France’s smallest Grand Cru monopole and among its most revered. Oolitic limestone soils, perfect elevation, and sun exposure. Just 5,000 bottles per year.

In 2018: rose petals, wild blackberry, roasted coffee, and white truffle.
On the palate: silk incarnate. Tannins vanish into texture. A vertical, vibrant, almost mystical finish.
Critic score: 96–98 pts – Wine Advocate
Style: Silent sensuality. A Grand Cru that doesn’t shout, but echoes.

2. Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Aux Reignots" 2018

Just above La Romanée, on cooler, steeper slopes. A Premier Cru with Grand Cru character. Rocky, shallow soils force the vines to dig deep, resulting in exceptional minerality.

Tasting notes: wild raspberries, orange blossom, grapefruit zest, and powdered clay.
On the palate: taut, long, quietly energetic. It doesn’t speak loudly—it whispers with precision.
Style: The most vertical of the domaine’s wines. Meditative in nature.
Critic score: 94–96 pts – Burghound
